Plaster vs Drywall
- Plaster is much more durable than drywall, even high-level drywall finishes. In addition, plaster outperforms drywall in a number of key areas, including insulation, soundproofing, and fireproofing. It is easier to damage the plasterboard than plaster.
- Plaster is much better to deal with water and moisture. Mold cannot grow inside of plaster. On other hand there are moisture resistant drywalls that also can be used.
- Installing drywall is much faster and easier therefore drywall installation is cheaper than plaster installation.
- Plumbing or electrical upgrades or repairs are much easier to do on plasterboards than on plaster. It’s also easier to hang things on drywall than on plaster wall.
Skimming is an ending touch to the wall which involves applying a thin coat to create the smooth surface required for painting or decorating. Either the skim plaster is applied to an existing plaster finish, or it’s used to cover plasterboard. The ‘perfect skimmed finish’ isn’t easy to achieve, it requires a trained professional who has had years of experience as a plasterer. It can also be used to repair minor damage to walls and cellings and to regain the perfect look of existing walls.
Ames taping is an alternative to plastering, which involves joining together plasterboards. The tape and joint cement is only put on the plasterboard joints and screw holes instead of the entire area.
